Eine der frühesten deutschen Übersetzungen von «Tausendundeine Nacht» ist zugleich eine der schönsten: Johann Heinrich Voß, der bis heute unübertroffene Homer-Übersetzer, hat im 18. Jahrhundert auch die orientalischen Geschichten übertragen. Seine lange zu Unrecht vergessene Übersetzung ist mit dieser Ausgabe neu zu entdecken.
Es gibt heute philologisch anspruchsvolle, auf das Arabische zurückgehende Ausgaben von «Tausendundeine Nacht», und dennoch lohnt es sich, die Fassung von Johann Heinrich Voß zu lesen. Seine Übersetzung dieser Geistermärchen, Liebesgeschichten, Abenteuerberichte und schwankhaften Dichtungen zeugt von einer unbändigen Lust am Erzählen. Voß übersetzte die französische Fassung, die Antoine Galland Anfang des 18. Jahrhunderts vorgelegt hatte, und veröffentlichte seine Ausgabe von 1782 bis 1785 in sechs Bänden. Wer sie las, battle bezaubert – seinem Verleger gelang es allerdings nicht, ihr eine weite Verbreitung zu sichern. Hier erscheint erstmals nach mehr als zwei Jahrhunderten eine Auswahl aus diesem Werk.
